After rejecting proposals for a replacement for the DB5 from Touring of Milan, the decision was made by Aston Martin to focus on their own development car, registered, 4 YMC. Testing it in a wind tunnel for the first time in February 1965, showed the need for work to counteract the test car’s rear end lift. So the final development phases saw a DB5 chassis, suitably lengthened and titled MP219, with a rear spoiler and abbreviated Kamm tail that Aston Martin had previously incorporated in sports racers.
The decision was made to progress MP 219 as the Aston Martin DB6 although its de Dion rear axle was replaced with a live axle on cost grounds. So the new car, announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, had a wheelbase extended by 3.75 inches with the extra inserted just ahead of the rear wheel arches and this allowed the roofline to be raised by an inch, while a further two inches of headroom was gained by reworking the seat squabs. Reducing the length of the trailing arms on the rear suspension, gave more elbow room at the back.
The seat shapes were changed to give greater shoulder and lumbar support while the dashboard changed only with the size and layout of individual dials. Externally, however, horizontally slatted grille beneath the number plate allowed better air flow to the oil cooler and visual symmetry of the new arrangement was maintained with a split bumper at the front that was mirrored at the rear of the car. Mechanically, the car was very similar to the Aston Martin DB5 with 3 SU carburettors fitted as standard. There were a number of items that a customer could specify at no extra cost – a Powr-Lok limited slip differential and chrome wire wheels. An electric aerial was fitted as standard, although the radio, which would be a customer choice, was considered an extra and was charged accordingly.
The DB6 remains one of the most popular Newport Pagnell Aston Martins. Presented in a classic colour combination of Graphite Grey with Black leather, the car is as striking to look at as she is to drive.
Developed as a driver’s car, it is an Aston Martin that will add driving enjoyment to its more obvious visual appeal. One for the enthusiast for the driving or a collector for its value.
There are two useful pieces of historical documentation with this lovely car that give us some direction as to its early history. The original Aston Martin Warranty shows the first owner was a Royden Meyer Esq. The other document, the original folding log book, shows Mr Meyer residing in Chigwell, Essex and that same document notes the transfer of the car to the second owner, Stile Educational Company of Oxford in January 1972. The registration number at that time was NYP 350E.
In May1975, the car was acquired by Christopher Walpole of Banbury in Oxfordshire. In April 1976, he acquired the registration number 69 CNW that had originally been on a Singer Vogue and the DB6 remained under his stewardship and on this registration until 2010 when the car was sold to Andrew Dooley of Hawkhurst in Kent and the registration number changed to ABW 220 E. After being with Mr Walpole for 35 years, the car had a much shorter stay with Mr Dooley and was acquired by the well known Sussex Aston Martin specialist Bill Goodall for use as his personal car.
Re-registered under his personal registration plate, 1 DBV, the car was then lavished with regular care and upgrading which included an engine capacity increase to 4.5 litre and ultimately a bare metal respray changing the colour from White to Black Pearl – in Bill’s own words:
“I completely reconditioned and modified the engine myself. I had the original block reconditioned by RS Williams -welded and line bored – new 4.5 litre liners and pistons fitted with race con rods. A full engine balance was carried out with all new bearings, chains and seals from Aston Martin. The whole job was finished off with special cams, stainless steel exhaust manifolds, a Weber conversion to Vantage specification and the whole car set up on a rolling road – she is a seriously quick car.”
With the expense of his daughter’s wedding approaching, Bill was tempted by a customer to sell the car in January of this year and the car reverted to the registration ABW 220 E. Sadly, health issues have prompted the current owner to put the car back to market.
