Introduction

Over the past 2/3 years, the market has come to recognize the value of the classic V8 Coupe. Some of the last hand-built Aston Martins from their traditional home at Newport Pagnell – they are identified as landmark cars.

The interior of the car, with its unusual Burr Amboyna veneer is immaculate and the bodywork is in generally sound order but has some chip and scuffs to the paintwork. Whilst not detracting from the performance or overall appearance of the car, our client has instructed us to offer the car at a value for money price to allow the next owner the leeway to rectify those minor blemishes.

But the real reason this car will be chosen by its next owner is its history, its outstanding value and the pleasure derived behind the wheel – a useable and beautiful classic Aston Martin

Background

Following the success of the Limited Edition V8 Coupe, the new ‘Vantage’ style V8 Coupe was introduced on the 5th of March 1996, at the Geneva Motor Show, alongside the DB7 Volante. Whereas all ten of the Limited Edition V8 Coupes shared many external features with the preceding Virage, the new V8 Coupe reflects the overall design themes and the smooth flowing aerodynamic lines of the Vantage, as was the case with most of the suspension system. However, it has its own distinctive design radiator intake, six spoke 18” x 8.5” alloy road wheels, and circular auxiliary driving lamps integrated within the front spoiler. Special compound 255 / 50 ZR18 Pirelli P Zero tyres were developed for the new model

The quad cam engine has 4 valves per cylinder, (last used by Aston Martin in 1921-2) and produces 350 horsepower. This was a further development of the now legendary Tadek Marek designed all alloy V8, with its racing pedigree. Improved cylinder heads, camshafts and pistons were fitted, together with an ‘Alpha Plus’ electronically controlled engine management system. According to Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd., the new V8 Coupe could reach 60 M.P.H. in less than 6.0 seconds and has a maximum speed in excess of 150 m.p.h. Naturally with the use of a three way catalytic exhaust system, the engine runs on unleaded fuel. However, for countries where leaded petrol is still the norm, a non-catalyst system was available. In effect, it is a ‘worldwide’ engine compatible for all markets.

The 4-speed automatic transmission is electronically controlled with Sport and Touring modes. Anti-lock AP / PBR brakes are fitted to all four wheels, with ventilated discs and four pot callipers. With a servo-assisted tandem master cylinder, the brakes are independent front and rear, controlled by a Bosch 4 channel ABS system. The power assisted rack and pinion steering is speed sensitive. The rear axle is fitted with a limited slip differential.

All body panels are hand crafted in aluminium. Requiring ten Connolly hides each luxurious interior could be tailored to individual tastes. Burr Walnut is used for the facia panel, centre console and door cappings, and Wilton carpet for the floor covering. There are a minimum of twelve separate coats of paint applied to each complete body.

There is power assistance for the adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats. A sophisticated climate control system is provided together with a stereo, radio, cassette and CD player. For the final touch of luxury, cruise control is fitted for long distance touring.

Vehicle History

This car has an outstanding background in terms of ownership having a single registered keeper from its first registration before that owner’s sad demise and the car was registered in his wife’s name.

Supplied originally by Paramount cars, early servicing was conducted by that supplying dealer. The stamps on the service book indicate that in the following years, service and maintenance was provided by Works Service and the owner himself. An enthusiastic engineer with a workshop together with a vehicle lift at his home, the owner continued the maintenance of the car and a comprehensive record of the MOT history demonstrates mileages and the efficacy of that maintenance and the car is presented in outstanding mechanical order.

Those words don’t properly articulate the passion that Aston Martin owners would recognise, so allow us to tell the story in his son’s own words:

“After 2005 my Father stepped back from our family company, retired and began looking after the car himself, he was a mechanical engineer by trade who was creative and meticulous in all aspects of his work. He serviced the car himself in his workshop at home which included a full array of Snap-on tools and a vehicle ramp. If he didn’t have the right tool he would get it. I am pretty sure there are some oil filters in the garage at the house that are more than welcome to join the vehicle as he would plan ahead and bought 20 odd in bulk. After losing his legs around 2012, he used the car for pleasure as taking an electric wheelchair in the vehicle was a problem, he used to take it out for drives with my mother to enjoy the country side in it. Not letting it stop him he carried on maintaining the vehicle to the same level of meticulousness. With his creative side, the oil cooler on the underside of the vehicle as it was damaged and replaced after a trip to Peterborough when he parked over a curb and knocked it, so he built in a protective add-on to prevent this from happening again. This car was his pride and joy and he wouldn’t let any once else drive it not myself or my mother. He would service the car every year without fail, changing the filters and the fully synthetic oil regardless of the mileage, when I helped him on occasion I would joke with him that the oil could go back in as it was so clean.”
