Introduction

One cannot overstate the history accumulated and recorded over the current owner’s 48 year stewardship of the car – it is a catalogue of personal notes, of course invoices but principally of a passionate relationship with a much-loved classic.

There are notes from the owner to a repair garage when a minor problem with the Aston threatened its use as a wedding car for his daughter. And twice the car was hired out for events and there is a hand written note from Aston Specialist Andy Chapman congratulating the owner when he had owned the car for 32 years – what should we say about nearly 48 years.

Resplendent in what is described as Helios Blue Metallic, she looks the part with the refurbished Webasto roof adding to the driving pleasure and with the recent work from ASD, she is not one to be missed.

Background

Background:

After rejecting proposals for a replacement for the DB5 from Touring of Milan, the decision was made by Aston Martin to focus on their own development car, registered, 4 YMC. Testing it in a wind tunnel for the first time in February 1965, showed the need for work to counteract the test car’s rear end lift. So, the final development phases saw a DB5 chassis, suitably lengthened and titled MP219, with a rear spoiler and abbreviated Kamm tail that Aston Martin had previously incorporated in sports racers.

The decision was made to progress MP 219 as the Aston Martin DB6 although its de Dion rear axle was replaced with a live axle on cost grounds. So, the new car, announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, had a wheelbase extended by 3.75 inches with the extra inserted just ahead of the rear wheel arches and this allowed the roofline to be raised by an inch, while a further two inches of headroom was gained by reworking the seat squabs. Reducing the length of the trailing arms on the rear suspension, gave more elbow room at the back.

The seat shapes were changed to give greater shoulder and lumbar support while the dashboard changed only with the size and layout of individual dials. Externally, however, horizontally slatted grille beneath the number plate allowed better air flow to the oil cooler and visual symmetry of the new arrangement was maintained with a split bumper at the front that was mirrored at the rear of the car. Mechanically, the car was very similar to the Aston Martin DB5 with 3 SU carburettors fitted as standard. There were a number of items that a customer could specify at no extra cost – a Powr-Lok limited slip differential and chrome wire wheels. An electric aerial was fitted as standard, although the radio, which would be a customer choice, was considered an extra and was charged accordingly.

Vehicle History

The dictionary offers an interesting definition of provenance – “a record of ownership of a work of art or an antique, used as a guide to authenticity or quality. And the same has always applied to the classic car market so when you find a car like 3348/R that has been in the same ownership for nearly 50 years, you hope that the story is complete and, thanks to a copy of the original folding log book, we know the whole story!

The first owner is recorded as Rowse Muir Publications of Charlotte Street, London, A little research shows that the company was a joint venture – David Rowse’s idea backed by Dickie Muir’s money - they were successful, but ultimately the two men, bon viveurs both, went their own ways. Muir, immensely affable, also owned the Chelsea restaurant La Popote and the first change of keeper to Richard Temple Muir, is stamped as occurring on 8th February 1969.

On 9th March 1971, the car was transferred to Wickham Securities of London SW3 – it is interesting that “Usual Signature on the log book for Wickham Securities is from the same Dickie Muir whose home address is noted as Wickham Place in Wickham Bishop! Wickham Securities remains an active company with two Directors with the surname Muir! The car only remained there for 18 months before she went to Witham in Essex to a Jeremy Spalding the following year.

The final entry into that document is a fascinating company – Conference and Exhibition Wardrobe Chambers of Queen Victoria Street London EC4. But to bring that ownership record right up to date, there is the Used Car Invoice when the current owner acquired this lovely DB6 in November 1977 from ISIS Garage in Hayes, Middlesex.

With around 65,000 miles on the clock, it was a very usable classic and suited the owner, an Aston Martin enthusiast, and a member of the Aston Martin Owners Club (AMOC). It was never bought as a main means of transport just for the joy of ownership but even then, it was a costly hobby and it was clear that the Aston was in need of some money spending on it that was beyond the owner’s immediate finances so in January 1981, he took it off the road. For the completeness of the history of the car, he asked contemporary neighbours for written confirmation that the car was laid up – those letters from part of what is a huge history file.

In November 1982, he contracted with a dealer to attend to the mechanical work that was needed – they did not do a very good job and the car was returned in December 1983 with its condition nowhere near satisfactory.

However, since that time, the owner’s enthusiasm is reflected in both regular maintenance and two major refurbishments, the most recent with Aston Specialists ASD Workshops of Dorset in 2022/23 reflecting a cumulative cost of £ 47,000 +.
