This is probably the best Aston Martin DB2/4 you will find on the market today or any time - the history folder for this car is astonishing and offers a recorded history that reflects that this car is not the product of a skilled restorer but rather a reflection of 70 years of love by successive owners that finishes with two lovers of history.

Background
Background:
The DB 2/4 was introduced at the London Motor Show in 1953. A development of the well received DB2, the 2/4 was to overcome the restrictions of a two seater with the addition of two occasional rear seats. Luggage capacity also increased with access via a third door or tailgate featuring an enlarged rear window. The luggage space can be further enhanced by folding down the rear seats. At the time, when three door cars were a rarity, this almost justified the comment, attributed to the Bentley Drivers Club, that the car was then the fastest shooting brake in the world.
The DB 2.6 engine is the production version of W.O. Bentley’s last brain child, conceived during the latter part of the second World War. With a capacity of 2,580 c.c. the Vantage engine was fitted as standard equipment until the 3.0 litre engine was introduced in April 1954 In 1955 three cars were prepared as works entries for the Monte Carlo Rally and won the team prize. Later that year two of the cars went on to compete in the Mille Miglia.
A special series engine, denoted by an ‘L’ or ‘L1’ suffix, said to develop 165 b.h.p., was offered as an option. The L cylinder head has larger valves and high lift camshafts. High compression pistons, giving 8.6:1, were also offered as an optional extra for competition, along with a larger fuel tank, close-ratio gearbox, racing clutch and 40 DCO Weber’s. A Mark II with standard cylinder head (chassis number AM300/1145) was road tested by Autosport (May 31st 1957), for which 0-60 and 0-100 m.p.h. acceleration times of 10 and 28 sec., a standing 1/4 mile in 17 sec. and a maximum speed of 118.4 m.p.h. were recorded. Roy Salvadori described the same car in Autocourse, (May 1957).

Vehicle History
A copy of the original build sheet for this lovely car notes that it was sold through the services of Aston Martin agent, Martin Walters to a John Marsh of Tunbridge Wells in Kent – the car’s first registration number was recorded as TKM 13.
Ownership history is then a mixture of club records, DVLA research and review of invoicing details from the extensive service history of this wonderful car.
1963 AMOC club records note the owner as a Mr B Balcombe and a new registration number 635 WKJ. The reverting to DVLA research, David Lewis was identified as a new owner on 21st September 1970 but his ownership was short lived and in April 1971 Anthony Whitehead was noted as the new owner. September 1975 saw the stewardship of the car change to a Richard Prentice
Mr Prentice had a fair amount of work done by Feltham specialists Four Ashes Garage, engine work included new pistons and liners and crankshaft grinding – two other feature of his ownership was a third place in the Birtsmorton Court Concours and a change of clock saw the mileometer return to zero!
In March 1989, ownership changed to a Paolo Cutrera but again a short lived ownership before the car went to auction when it was bought in September 1990 by a Felicity Henriques. Although there is no DVLA record, service invoice records suggest a Neil Baker owned the car in 1996 when a substantial amount of work was done by Tony Curtis with parts principally supplied by Aston Service in Dorset.
On 11th May 1997, DVLA records are referred to noting a Patrick Mulligan with disposal of the car noted as being 3rd October 2002. And in May 2003 at the Aston Martin Sale at Newport Pagnell, she was purchased by the last recorded owner, T & V Holt and Associates.
That sounds a bit grand and corporate but was in fact Tonie and Valmai Holt, residents of Sandwich in Kent who worked together developMajor Tonie Holt, to respect his rank as a professional soldier, had a great career culminating in graduation to Staff College where he realised that his future was going to be largely behind a desk, which did not appeal – if he was going to be behind a desk, it would be his.ing the first organisation to offer battle field tours, keeping memories of great events alive for many future generations.
Valmai, who Tonie had married in 1958, was already a published author and Tonie decided to look at writing military history and visiting battlefields – by chance they bought some postcards at a Malvern auction and it inspired their first book “Till the Boys Come Home: The First World War through its Picture Postcards”. Its success encouraged Purnell’s Book Club to take up the Holts’ idea of offering readers a battlefield tour to improve membership retention. The tour, in 1977, was intended as a one-off, but as the coach returned from Ypres and Normandy, the participants asked: “Where to next?”
The rest, is literally history! Further tours as time went on included Channel Islands, Berlin, Paris, Verdun, Holland, Bastogne, Waterloo, Dieppe, Colditz, Arnhem, Gallipoli, Luxembourg, USA, Italy, Athens, The Crimea, Egypt, Tunisia, India, South Africa, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Norway, Pearl Harbour, Norway, China – Yangtze, Korea, Falklands, Burma, Palestine, Korea, Malaysia, Japan and more and with the tours, came the guide books
There was recognition aplenty, when George W Bush made a Presidential visit to 10 Downing Street, Gordon Brown was asked to invite historians and Tonie and Valmai took their places at the top table.
And the incredible attention to detail that characterised their business can be seen in this stunning example of Feltham Aston Martin. After they bought the car in Newport Pagnell, the car stayed a while for a full Road Test and Report by Works Service and remedial service work so that they were able to drive her home to Sandwich in Kent under their own steam.
And although they only covered around 12,000 miles in the car over a 20-year period, the maintenance by local specialists, Roses Garage, was unstinting which is reflected in the presentation of the car today.
As you may imagine, they were regulars on AMOC Tours in the UK and abroad and in is unsurprising that one photo of 121 LUE on the 2005 Dieppe Retro Rally, together with Valmai in a spectacular hat was chosen by AutoGlym, the cleaning product company, to promote their products as best for caring for your classic Aston Martin.
The history folder for this car is astonishing and offers a recorded history that reflects that this car is not the product of a skilled restorer but rather a reflection of 70 years of love by successive owners that finishes with two lovers of history.
Sadly, Tonie passed in 2024 at 91years old and Valmai more recently, however, she was finally awarded the recognition of their work with an MBE in the 2026 New Year’s Honours that said was for both of them.
The legacy of their Battlefield Tours and historical guides lives on and we know that the next owner LML/773 will enjoy the legacy of their care for the car.
