Introduction
Purchased by the current owner through Byron International after a comprehensive Road Test & Report, the clear intention was to bring the car to an exemplary standard.
After remedial work identified in the initial report, the car was transported to the owner's home in Aberdeen and then on to Classic Restorations (Scotland) Ltd who undertook a thorough refurbishment which included a new ZF automatic gearbox and re-upholstering the interior as well as numerous additional improvements.
We, and a future owner, are fortunate that the owner has made the decision to sell the Aston and the car came down to Sussex where Vantage Engineering completed work identified on a pre-sale inspection.
It means that the benefit of an expenditure of over £100,000 by the owner since acquisition will pass to its new owner, making this a DB6 not to miss - outstanding condition, great history and a cracking colour combination.
Background
Background
After rejecting proposals for a replacement for the DB5 from Touring of Milan, the decision was made by Aston Martin to focus on their own development car, registered, 4 YMC. Testing it in a wind tunnel for the first time in February 1965, showed the need for work to counteract the test car’s rear end lift. So the final development phases saw a DB5 chassis, suitably lengthened and titled MP219, with a rear spoiler and abbreviated Kamm tail that Aston Martin had previously incorporated in sports racers.
The decision was made to progress MP 219 as the Aston Martin DB6 although its de Dion rear axle was replaced with a live axle on cost grounds. So the new car, announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, had a wheelbase extended by 3.75 inches with the extra inserted just ahead of the rear wheel arches and this allowed the roofline to be raised by an inch, while a further two inches of headroom was gained by reworking the seat squabs. Reducing the length of the trailing arms on the rear suspension, gave more elbow room at the back.
The seat shapes were changed to give greater shoulder and lumbar support while the dashboard changed only with the size and layout of individual dials. Externally, however, horizontally slatted grille beneath the number plate allowed better air flow to the oil cooler and visual symmetry of the new arrangement was maintained with a split bumper at the front that was mirrored at the rear of the car. Mechanically, the car was very similar to the Aston Martin DB5 with 3 SU carburettors fitted as standard. There were a number of items that a customer could specify at no extra cost – a Powr-Lok limited slip differential and chrome wire wheels. An electric aerial was fitted as standard, although the radio, which would be a customer choice, was considered an extra and was charged accordingly.
Summary:
We, and a future owner, are fortunate that the owner has made the decision to sell the Aston even before he has been able to fully enjoy the fruits of his investment in this lovely car – but that means that this is an incredible opportunity for the any buyer.
The DB6 is acknowledged as the ultimate version of the original Turing design and retains a huge popularity – this is a great example that enjoys the benefit of a sympathetic and substantial investment with a top restoration company and is highly recommended.
Vehicle History
The service book for this lovely Aston Martin DB6 notes delivery to the first owner, Mr S Morris of Oak Hill Park in London on 16th July 1968. The supplying dealer was Boradway Autos of Cricklewood.
The service book notes regular service by Broadway Autos in its early life but later services in this early part of its history were carried out by three other dealers inferring changes of owner – however, there is no other documented detail except for database records of the car being in the stewardship of an AMOC member, Mr Lankshear from 1973 – 1981. In terms of paper records, registration documentation notes that Aston Martin Sales in Sloane Street acquired the car in May 1983 and they sold the car to a Thomas Lundstrom of Salisbury in July of the same year.
.There is little documentary record of Mr Lundstom’s ownership until he took the car to Aston specialist Desmond Smail in August 1992 when a substantial recommissioning of the car took place. The same dealer, Desmond Smail, was instrumental in the sale of the car to a new owner, Stephen Wainwright in 1994. The history of the car since 1994 is provided by a combination of service invoices and hand written detail from the owner’s log.
After a substantial period with the car stored in the owner’s garage, a comprehensive list of remedial work was carried out on the car to allow completion of an MOT before the car was offered for sale by Byron International in 2015.
An agreement to purchase the car was reached over December 2015/January 2016 with the current owner after a Road Test & Report by Newlands Motors. After purchase, they carried out remedial work that they had identified and the car was transported to its new owner’s home in Aberdeen.
The car was then put into the care of Classic Restorations (Scotland) Ltd who undertook a thorough overhaul which included replacing the automatic gearbox with an uprated item, re-fettling the sunroof, addressing paint and mechanical refurbishment and re-upholstering the seating. All of this work represented an investment by the owner of over £100,000 and has substantially improved the car.

Scrap down old & re-foam rear quarter panels. Cover panels in leather, clean up chrome parts & fit. Fit panels together. Finish covering above window panels & start to fit. Sand paint from front of car as required. Cut rotten section from NS front wing, make new section & weld into place, grind welds. Weld up OS door & grind welds. Strip down door cards & tops, pattern & cut out new MDF panels, drill holes & paint black. Re-foam door cards. Cut out & machine up panels for top rail of door cut. Cut out & machine up pockets & panels for cards. Finish fitting window panels. Strip down parcel shelf & rear speaker panel & cover in foam. Start to cover pipe panels. Fill & shape front of car. Fit up tops of doors with new leather. Fit & cover panels thatmake up door card. Fit pocket panels into door cards. Cover parcel shekf in foam & leather. Adjust window panels.

Fill and shape front of car, for paintshop. Sanded filler on body, repaired and filled dents on bonnet. Sanded down bonnet and prep for paintwork. Check colour chips to achieve good match. Take measurements of window panels. Fitted new speakers onto panels. Machine up rear seat back cover. Cut out and pattern arm rest panels, machine up covers and fit to arm-rest frame. Fill and shape Fit ashtrays, chrome and arm-rests to door cards. Strip down front seats, start to pattern up. Mark up and punch holes in material to allow emission of speaker sound. Fitted foam and material onto metal panel. Finish off sanding filler on car. Prepared both sides of car for paintwork and filled any imperfections. Start to mask car in paintbooth for priming various repairs all over body of car. Finish off masking up car, sprayed repairs with high build primer & baked. Start to sand primer. Pattern, bind & fit new carpets onto door cards, fit new speakers. Fit new draught excluder along door top panels. Cut out main seat panels, foam & machine design onto leather. Go over all blocked panels with finer abrasive Pattern, cut & machine up panels for front seat back covers then fit onto main seat panels. Strip down front kick panels, re-cover in carpet & leather. Polish up chrome parts & fit all back together. Prepare rest of car for paintwork & started to mask up in booth. Fit new covers onto rear seat cushion & back foam. Fit hessian onto seats.

Fit rear armrests, fit back seats, waxoyl doors & start to fit door cards. Remove radio console, cut hole to suit new radio & fit radio to console. Fit radio GPS aerial & microphone & connect wiring plugs for radio. Fit OS door cards. Clean up & grease runners for seats & fit front seats into car. Fit carpets, kick panels & seats.
