Coming directly from its French owner who acquired this lovely Aston Martin through our brokerage in 2010, it is a pleasure to offer this car to the market again. Taken originally from long term storage and acquired initially for an interesting registration, she soon found favour with a Sussex based Aston enthusiast in her own right.

Initially recommissioned by Bill Goodall of Newlands Motors, the French owner maintained contact with Newlands for parts to complement local maintenance.

The "four headlight" DBS has become a highly valued and evocative symbol of its era especially this earlier version with the "gills" on the C post and in this manual form is one of the most sought after versions – appreciated as both collectible and usable – this beautiful car is both collectible and very usable.

First shown in September 1967, the DBS was styled by William Towns who had joined the company a year earlier. A development of the DB6, the DBS was initially conceived as a limited production fast two seater and prepared to accommodate the new V8 engine designed by Tadek Marek which had been raced in experimental form in The Lola Aston Martin. To accommodate the width of a V8 engine the steel platform chassis of the DB6 was increased in width by 4 1/2" and the wheel base lengthened by 1” to allow the engine to be lowered behind the front cross member. Although wider than a DB6 by 6” it is both lower by 1 ¼” and Shorter by 1 ½”, which gives the car a powerful compact appearance.

The standard engine produced 282 b.h.p. whilst 325 b.h.p. was claimed for the Vantage. A de Dion rear axle was fitted with a limited slip differential. The model was in production from October 1967 to May 1972, during which time 787 cars were produced.

Almost all manufacturers take their models through a process of development and improvement and the DBS is no exception. As a result, there was a continuous process of development and change throughout the production of the DBS, the most noticeable changes being the deeper spoilers fitted to the later cars and improved ventilation.

The ‘four headlight’ DBS has become highly valued and evocative of the seventies. A manual car such as is one of the most sought-after versions, appreciated as both collectible and eminently useable on an everyday basis. With its predecessors, the DB4, DB5, and DB6, still commanding huge premiums on the current value of a DBS for cars of similar condition, this represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a six-cylinder Aston Martin from the hand-built era of the marque.

She is a great car hoping for an owner who will use her for the purpose she was built – to be driven and enjoyed.

Vehicle History

This is a car with a quite extraordinary history – it appears to have spent over half its life in various forms of storage.

The AML Build sheet indicates it was a factory demonstrator from 2nd October 1968 until December that year when a letter dated just before Christmas from Normand Garage Ltd., and a transfer of warranty letter sent 30th December 1968, to the second owner, a Mr M.S. Vickers, Plantation House, Mincing Lane, London EC5. Following we have little record of its early life, the first we know of the car was when it was acquired in 1992 when it had been standing in a barn for 10 years, with the engine head off, awaiting attention. It was not bought for the Aston Martin heritage but the rather more prosaic reason of a fine registration number. .

The car a very early car it has certain unique features lost in later production such as the wood panel dash and the 'three flutes' behind the rear windows, both of which make the car more attractive than the later cars. It was sent to a restorer in Hailsham in East Sussex where the car was dismantled but they never got round to the job of re-assembly although the engine appeared to be in one piece.

>p>It was fully eight years later that, at the owner’s request, Aston Martin Specialists, Newlands Motors, collected the car from Hailsham in late 2000 and set about restoring the car. They fully expected to have to work on the engine, but running it up after re-assembly, the pressures and all functions were 100%.

There was a brief couple of years of intermittent usage before the car was returned to storage for another 4 years until the current owner asked Newlands Motors to recommission the car which resulted in an invoice value of nearly £8,500.

It was in 2010 that Byron International were asked to market the car on behalf of the owner and she found a new home with an Aston enthusiast in France. And there she has remained for the past 10 years, enjoyed and used very sparingly.
