Introduction

One of just 84 Aston Martin DB Mark III Dropheads built, this car has an immaculate provenance and a service record, during the Milton family ownership from 1966 – 2005, that is meticulously recorded in hand written journals.

We were delighted to be contacted by the current German owner soon after he acquired the car – in his 14 years of ownership the car has been maintained to the very highest of standards and we are proud to offer this outstanding car to market once more.

That maintenance has included a full repaint, engine rebuild, enhancements like electronic power steering and 2 speed wipers and the car is presented in even better condition than when we first represented the car in 2005 and the under-bonnet tool box is still complete!

This is a car presented in outstanding condition but she is not just for looking at – she performs as well as she looks and whether gracing a collection or campaigning Classic Rallies, she will be a worthwhile investment.

Background

Background:

The final refinement of the cars based on Claude Hill’s design and the Lagonda six-cylinder twin overhead cam shaft engine, is the DB Mark III. Launched in March 1957 at the Geneva Motor Show, it was available for export only until the London Motor Show in October of the same year. The model remained in production for about nine months after the DB4 was introduced. Of the 550 (approximately) cars produced over two thirds were exported to the U.S.A.

The chassis specification was very similar to the DB2/4 MkII. An option of Girling front disc brakes was available from the start of production but became a standard fitting after the first 100 cars were produced. Tadek Marek, the gifted engineer who had recently joined Aston Martin and would go on to design the next generation 6-cylinder engines and then the V8, virtually re-designed the 3.0 litre engine. This included a new block (with top seating Liners), a stiffer crankcase, a new crankshaft, oil pump and timing chain. Performance was equally improved by re-designing the induction and exhaust manifolds, whilst the ports are based on the DB3S engine, with larger valves and high lift cam shafts. The majority of cars were fitted with the DBA engine which was claimed to produce 162 b.h.p. at 5500 r.p.m., breathing though twin SU carburettors.

In appearance the Mark III can be distinguished from the MkII at the front by the elegant shaped radiator opening adopted from the DB3S and consequently compound curves of the front of the bonnet, which can be traced on all subsequent models including the V8. And from the rear by the cathedral rear lights which give the car a much cleaner appearance. Opening rear quarter light windows are also fitted. Internally, the facia and instrument panel are completely different, the latter remaining in use up to the DB6 MkII. The standard transmission remained the same as the MkII, with overdrive as an option.

The Mark III is nearly 9” longer than the DB2 and weighs about 350 lb more, which is an increase of about 15%. However, more than 50% more power is available from the standard DBA, compared to the original LB6B engine. It was described by The Autocar (October 4th 1957), who recorded: 9.3 sec 0-60 M.P.H., 31.0 sec 0-100 M.P.H., 17.4 sec over a standing quarter mile and a maximum speed of 120 m.p.h.

Vehicle History

A great history for a car begins with the original folding log book, and this log book matches the copy of the factory build sheet noting the original registered keeper as Ross Brothers of Ilkley in Yorkshire.

That document allows us to follow the early ownership though an Ian Smith of Keighley before a trip across the Pennines to Calderbrook Jute Ltd of Littleborough in Lancashire. Then in January 1966 the car passed in ownership to Arthur Milton of Brockenhurst in Hampshire.

The car then stayed in the Milton family for several decades during which time it was meticulously restored right down to the chassis and bulkhead in the late 1980’s, with a number of improvements effected to the engine performance, suspension and ancillaries. These modifications included a complete overhaul of the engine and transmission (including high lift cams with a resultant boost to the standard b.h.p.), twin stainless steel exhausts, competition springs and a series of well thought out corrosion resistance mitigation measures with respect to eliminating electrolytic corrosion and maximising the use of stainless-steel components wherever possible.

In fact the new owner of this car will, alongside the car, become custodian of three wonderfully crafted note books – Aston Martin 1966-1979, Aston Martin 1979 – 1990 and Aston Martin 1991 -

For the period leading up, including and after the rebuild, every detail of (any) work ever carried out on this particularly well-looked after example was part of this meticulous record. Retrimmed and repainted, the major work is obvious, even to the untrained eye, however, it is the detail where this car scores exceptionally well. The Milton family in their long-term ownership went to great lengths to ensure this car performs as well as it looks.

Byron International were privileged to broker the sale of the car from the Milton Family to a Nicholas Papalios in Athens in 2005 and registered 101659. The Greek collector sold the car at auction in 2008 to a German collector Johann Bongartz of Aacchen who only owned the car briefly before it was purchased by the current owner through the services of the well-known classic car dealers Movendi.
