Introduction
50 years in current ownership but with a clear service/maintenance history that goes back even further, stolen, restored and recovered, this car has a remarkable story to tell.
Enthusiastically entered into classic events, the Alperform head (original head and air filters with car) and regular maintenance makes this one of the best driving Mark III’s out there.
She is not a trailer queen but a car to enjoy on an open road. Come and have a drive and understand why you should own this lovely car.
Background
Background:
The final refinement of the cars based on Claude Hill’s design and the Lagonda six-cylinder twin overhead camshaft engine, is the DB Mark III. Launched in March 1957 at the Geneva Motor Show, it was available for export only until the London Motor Show in October of the same year. The model remained in production for about nine months after the DB4 was introduced. Of the 550 (approximately) cars produce over two thirds were exported to the U.S.A.
The chassis specification was very similar to the DB2/4 MkII. An option of Girling front disc brakes was available from the start of production but became a standard fitting after the first 100 cars were produced. Tadek Marek, the gifted engineer who had recently joined Aston Martin and would go on to design the next generation 6-cylinder engines and then the V8, virtually re-designed the 3.0 litre engine. This included a new block (with top seating Liners), a stiffer crankcase, a new crankshaft, oil pump and timing chain. Performance was equally improved by re-designing the induction and exhaust manifolds, whilst the ports are based on the DB3S engine, with larger valves and high lift camshafts. The majority of cars were fitted with the DBA engine, which was claimed to produce 162 b.h.p. at 5500 r.p.m., breathing though twin SU carburettors. A few (47) cars were supplied with the uprated DBD specification engine with triple SU carburettors giving an advertised 180 bhp.
In appearance, the Mark III can be distinguished from the MkII at the front by the elegant shaped radiator opening adopted from the DB3S and consequently compound curves of the front of the bonnet, which can be traced on all subsequent models including the V8. And from the rear by the cathedral rear lights which give the car a much cleaner appearance. Opening rear quarter light windows are also fitted. Internally, the facia and instrument panel are completely different, the latter remaining in use up to the DB6 MkII. The standard transmission remained the same as the MkII, with overdrive as an option.
The Mark III is nearly 9†longer than the DB2 and weighs about 350 lb more, which is an increase of about 15%. However, more than 50% more power is available from the standard DBA, compared to the original LB6B engine. It was described by The Autocar (October 4th 1957), who recorded: 9.3 sec 0-60 m.p.h., 31.0 sec 0-100 m.p.h., 17.4 sec over a standing quarter mile and a maximum speed of 120 m.p.h.
Summary:
Values of Feltham cars have not been left out in the upward climb of other Aston Martin models and the DB Mark III as the ultimate iteration of the DB2/4 has seen the strongest rise on the Feltham saloons. But so much depends on the presentation quality and history/provenance of these cars.
You would be hard pressed to find another car with such a complete and colourful history and record of ownership – this is a truly exceptional car and one that has clearly rewarded successive owners and will continue to provide enjoyment in the next chapter.
Vehicle History
If the value of a car is directly proportional to its volume of history and detail of ownership, AM300/3/1420 would be priceless – a copy of the original build sheet confirms detail provided to one of the previous owners by Surrey County Council Local Taxation Office. They note that from 4th December 1957 to 16th of the same month, the car was with HW Motors of Walton on Thames.
Validating the detail of the build sheet, they then confirm that the car was under the stewardship of a JF Holman of Holman Brothers in Camborne, Cornwall. From 17th December 1957 until 1st October 1963. From 2nd October that year until 11th January 1965, the owners were Knights Hill Motors of London SE. On the 12th January, ownership transferred to a Mr Walker of Esher in Surrey who kept the car until 1th February 1968 when, in his own words, he reluctantly sold it to Flight Lieutenant Wood of the RAF based, strangely enough back in Cornwall at an RAF base in Wadebridge.
We are indebted to Flight Lieutenant Wood for his careful research into the ownership history of the car and to the fact that being posted overseas, he then sold the car to a service colleague, JS Tayler who was similarly careful with the record keeping. We have part of the original folding log book for the car but, as the tale unfolds on this car’s journey, the ownership details are missing.
Mr Tayler kept the car in Cornwall where it was locally serviced with original Aston Martin parts acquired through Plough Motors in Gloucestershire. His adventures included a caravan tour of France and Spain in 1970 when the Aston is reported to have run admirably even taking mountains in its stride. He sold the car to Plough Motors who, in turn sold it to the current owner who lived, at the time, in London NW.
The current owner appears not to have enjoyed the same performance from the car as evidenced in the history by two separate inspections of the engine but it took a few years before, like so many owners of Feltham Astons, the owner found himself in correspondence with the redoubtable Captain Forshaw at Aston Service Dorset and that team brought the engine back to where it should be, along with the electrics and many other items. However, it was not many years later that a longer break from enjoying his classic Aston arrived for the owner.
In common with many London owners of classic cars, he kept the car in a lock-up garage and it was from that location that the car was stolen in July 1987! The owner informed all the usual people – Brixton police, his insurers, the AMOC and the ubiquitous Captain Forshaw.
It was from Captain Forshaw that news of the car first appeared – Aston Service had received a call about the car and had a telephone contact number. Passing that on to the police, a request was received to request the removal of the “lost†advert in the AMOC News as the police indicated a wider investigation.
It was a false dawn and by July 1988 the owner had been persuaded to accept a pay out from his insurers on the basis of a written. agreement that gave him the right to purchase salvage if the car was found.
In November 1988 contact came from someone who was considering purchase of the car and this led to a meeting with a South London Classic Car Specialist. It turned out that they had bought the car and offered to sell it back to the owner to defray their costs – he refused as they did not have proper title but the case did not stop there.
Conversations and correspondence with brokers and the insurance company reached a dead end when it was discovered that contrary to the written agreement, the insurance company had sold the salvage to the previously mentioned classic car dealer.
Determined to reclaim his beloved Aston, the owner did not give up and with substantial investment in legal advice finally involved the Financial Investigations Services, retained by the insurers to resolve the case.
A visit to the dealer established that the car had undergone a restoration – rather than the classic two-tone Silver over Green that he remembered the car was now a single solid Chiltern Green, fully repaired and resprayed, new interior leatherwork, carpets and linings, chrome replated and new road wheels. The investor who had commissioned all this work was identified by the invoices and the re-registration of the car that had been completed. Negotiation and final acceptance of culpability by the insurers saw the owner’s costs covered and the car came home. A happy ending underlined by the AMOC’s help in recovering the original registration number for the car.
A safer home for the car with the owner’s move to the home counties has meant that he has enjoyed a further 30 years of driving pleasure and the history folder includes photos of the car on regular outings to Classic Car Runs – an astonishing and complete history will make parting tough after 50 years but we are sure that the car is looking forward to future adventures. And perhaps to underline his commitment to the car, even after the replacement of the head with a new Alperform unit, in his garage is the original cast iron head and valve gear sitting with the original air filters!
